Interview with Rob Oryl of Valuation Nation

This weeks one on one interview is with Rob Oryl of Valuation Nation.

1-      How long have you been in the Real Estate Industry?

My entire life: I worked new home construction for a number of years, received a degree in economics, and then started working in the appraisal field.

2-      When did Valuation-Nation open up its doors, and what motivated you to do so?

Working in the appraisal field I got to know and work with a number of appraisers. A team of the best appraisers I knew soon developed into Valuation Nation.

3-      I know there have been changes in the appraisal aspect of the industry.  How has that impacted you if at all?

Most regulation changes in the industry have not affected the day-to-day operations of Valuation Nation: for example we operated with higher standards than the HVCC way before it was implemented. However, some regulations have changed who can order an appraisal for certain purposes and we have changed our marketing/networking efforts accordingly.

4- Does the turn around time differ among states?

Certain areas of the country do not have a unified, reliable MLS. Research needed for due diligence in those areas can take slightly more time (usually just an extra day).

5-      If I wanted to order an appraisal what would be the best way for me to do so?

The website has an ‘order appraisal’ option: http://www.Valuation-Nation.com. You can also call me direct 609-815-8997 or email me: rob@valuation-nation.com

6-      What makes Valuation-Nation stand out amongst other appraisal companies?

They way we differ from other appraisal companies is our commitment to excellence in the appraisal field and customer service. Our custom designed tracking and ordering system allows us to provide service above and beyond what you would expect from your local department store or favorite sandwich shop. Also, whether an appraisal is ordered for a tax appeal, FHA refinance, commercial assignment or any other purpose, we have an appraiser with the proper experience, knowledge, and credentials to meet any client’s needs.

7- What are the services you provide at Valuation-Nation?

We only do appraisals; I feel we should stick to what we know.

8-      What do you see on the horizon for the appraisal industry?

The new danger in the appraisal industry is states creating their own rules for appraisal management companies. While I applaud some of the requirements, the high fees in some states leave me only two options: increase the fee of the appraisal to the consumer and cut the pay of my appraisers just to break even – or – stop operating in that state.

Also, The HVCC agreement ‘sunsets’ or becomes null and void this summer. It will be interesting to see what happens then. Congress has expressed some interest in creating nationwide appraisal regulations; however their bill to ‘sunset’ the HVCC couldn’t be passed before the HVCC sunsets itself.

Thank you Rob for introducing your business to our readers.  If you like to reach Rob at Valuation Nation, here is his contact information.

BOSTON (TheStreet) — Some of the best business ideas are borne of the notion that “it’s so crazy, it just might work.”

Who would have predicted the success of Zhu Zhu Pets? These hot toys of the 2009 holiday season, created by the small toymaker Cepia, have their own application on Apple’s(AAPL Quote) iPhone. A Zhu Zhu Pets game for the Nintendo DS is due out this spring.

Here are three of our favorite success stories from entrepreneurs who took a chance on seemingly strange ideas.

    Mediabistro.com

The average salary in journalism is $41,000, according to Simplyhired.com. This may be why it may sound nuts to target journalists as a potential source of revenue. But that’s what Laurel Touby did with Mediabistro.com, which hosts parties and offers job-hunting services, classes and advice to more than 850,000 media professionals. In 2007, she sold the company to Jupitermedia (now WebMediaBrands(WEBM Quote)) for $23 million.

What began in 1994 as a series of informal gatherings for Touby’s writer friends quickly bloomed into a word-of-mouth community. In 1996 she launched the Web site after forming focus groups to find out what the community wanted in an industry resource center.

“I basically listened to the customer, and in that way extracted money out of people who you would think had no money,” she says.

The organization still relies on a model of “party marketing,” a term Touby coined. “Nobody’s going to open an e-mail that says, ‘buy my product,’” Touby says, which is why Mediabistro.com sends e-mails with “Come to our party” in the subject line. The messages lead with party information but end with a plug for upcoming classes, which cost up to $499.  Read More.
